Art Academy

Simon enjoys teaching on his 'Introduction to stone carving' course at the Art academy in Southwark, London. He has attracted ambitious students on his evening and 5 day courses there. With his help, his students are able to carry out their ideas. Students are encouraged to study their subject before carving, with sketches and a clay model.

Student Comments:

"I'm reliably informed by Simon that I'm his longest serving student ! Having started sculpting at the Art Academy about 8 years ago I decided after two great years working in clay that I should perhaps try out stone carving and the rest as they say is history. Simon's sheer passion for his craft is the driving force of his classes and why we all return time and again- in my case for now over 6 years.

Simon is an excellent teacher, his breath of experience as a stone carver means that as a beginner you get the best possible grounding in this craft - if you've never held a hammer and chisel before it can be quite scary but he is so extremely patient and hugely encouraging throughout the process.

Each Students project no matter how small or large is treated with the same enthusiasm and the classes always have a great energy and sense of fun. If you've ever thought its something you might try I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Simon's class and who know you may end up hooked like me!" Fiona Coles, Solicitor

"Simon's passion and enthusiasm for stone carving creates a great learning environment. He simplifies the challenge of creating form from stone by taking his students through the process step by step, demystifying what can seem a daunting prospect at the beginning. Simon's skill is to make stone carving seem simple, so that it is possible to create a complete sculpture in the first 10 week course. He is on hand to provide advice when it's needed, but allows students to work independently when they feel confident enough. With Simon's guidance I have been able to create work beyond my early expectations." Tim Kitchin, Art Academy evening class regular

"Simon Keeley is an acclaimed sculptor who runs a great class. The opportunity to work with Simon is a must for anyone, whether a sculptor, painter or indeed with no relevant experience what-so-ever.

Using a choice of stones Simon expertly coaxes the best out of all his pupils and evidently revels in their successes.

I’m not sure I have ever enjoyed a class so much – with a 10 week duration students get to know each other well and enjoy the ‘community’ feel of the courses.

From someone who had never carved before and had only a couple of clay sculptures under my belt I can’t recommend this course highly enough. Give it a go." Nick Bennett, IT Manager BSkyB Ltd

"Simon is passionate about stone carving and manages to convey his enthusiasm to his students. He is willing to share his depth of knowledge and experience both as a stonemason and artist of many years standing. He demonstrates and encourages throughout his lessons with the aid of his loud voice and cheerful demeanour. His students will acquire the basics of stone carving and the urge to try more." Val Bunn -3rd year Diploma Student -The Art Academy

"I signed up for a 5-day introductory course in stone carving with Simon in the summer. Not only did I learn an enormous amount about technique and how to carve in stone, but I also had a great time as well and really enjoyed the experience.

Simon is a great tutor as he is not only very experienced and knowledgeable, but his tutorial approach made the course really interesting, enjoyable and infectious. I am now truly bitten with the stone carving bug!" Clare Wigg, Design Director

Louise's carving"Simon's enthusiam for the craft of stonecarving really comes through in his teaching. He's able to keep the class atmosphere informal and fun, whilst motivating students to achieve really impressive pieces. All in all a very enjoyable class." Louise, software engineer

"I had the most amazing week on Simon Keeley's 'Stone Carving Course' at The Art Academy in London. Having never done Stone Carving before it was slightly daunting but Simon being the amazing teacher he is guided us through the week. The course enabled us to be creative, we learnt how to carve the stone from our 3 dimensional ideas and the results of our final pieces were fantastic. I know all the group gained new knowledge and expertise from Simons teaching, he taught us many techniques of how to manipulate the stone from idea to actual finished sculpture. I will definitlely be attending his courses in the future and wouldnt hesitate in recommending any of his courses." Suzannah Coombes - Art Academy - Summer school Stone carving -5 day course

“I was very fortunate to be student of Simon Keeley. I met Simon at Art Academy, where I study. He was my Stone Carving teacher when my very first contact with Stone, and not only me but the whole class, immediately felt his exceptional teaching skills, energy and passion which are extremely contagious. He transmits a great enthusiasm and confidence in his classes.

His teachings was and still is of great importance in my development as a sculptor. His Old Traditional approach as a Stone Mason/Stone Carver, using only manual techniques, is also of great influence and source of inspiration.

I owe Simon my condition as Stone Sculptor. His craft skills and work are fantastic, one can see the love and dedication carved in each Artwork of his. Simon Keeley represents and teaches what a Stone Carver should be.”
